Tom Hiddleston has won ELLE Man Of The Year at the ELLE Style Awards 2014.

He couldn’t be with us tonight, so he sent us – and you – this message instead. No, we didn’t smack him around the head to make him do it (but there’s a good story behind that plaster!) And yes, shooting this VT was the most fun we’ve had at midnight in a hotel room in, well, forever.

It’s been a massive year for Tom, who reprised his role as the wicked Loki in blockbuster, Thor: The Dark World and recently starred in critically acclaimed Only Lovers Left Alive, as well as winning rave reviews for his portrayal of Coriolanus at London’s Donmar Warehouse.

Tom Hiddleston, the Old Etonian actor, is keen to distance himself from David Cameron’s party.

For all the efforts of Mike Read and Jim “Nick, Nick” Davidson, the Conservative Party could do with some cool celebrity supporters to trounce Labour’s Richard Wilson and Prunella Scales. It may not, however, be a good idea to suggest to Tom Hiddleston that now is the moment for him to come to the aid of David Cameron’s party.
“I’m not in the Conservative Party,” harrumphs the 32-year-old actor, who is currently appearing in Coriolanus at the Donmar.
But, Tom, you went to Eton and you are posh. “It’s just an accident of birth,” he ripostes in Time Out London. “And I’m sorry if you are offended by that. I’m not a big fan of the class system, to be honest. It feels ugly to me. If the work is good, it doesn’t matter where you come from.”

Not Emily’s type
Emily Maitlis appears to be strangely resistant to Boris Johnson’s famous charms. The Newsnight presenter, who went on Have I Got News For You when the Mayor of London was the guest host, has no desire to repeat the experience.

“I have done panel shows. They suck. Sadly,” she says. One in the eye, too, for David Mitchell and Lee Mack with whom she appeared on the Would I Lie to You?

Beefy’s beef

Sir Ian Botham once talked about his “lifetime love affair” with cricket. Just lately, however, “Beefy” admits that the relationship has been cooling.
“I’ve deliberately stayed out of touch with everybody in the cricket world,” he sighs at the Music and Mountains fundraising event for Wellbeing of Women at the Hilton Doubletree Hotel.
“England were pretty ordinary in Australia. Actually, they were weak and it was embarrassing. I thought I would get a lot of stick in Australia after sticking my neck out and saying we were going to win 5-0. I got the score right, I just got it the wrong way round.”

Tom Hiddleston has signed up to star in an adaptation of JG Ballard’s classic thriller High-Rise.

The Avengers actor will take the lead as Laing, a young doctor, in the film, directed by British filmmaker Ben Wheatley, ScreenDaily reported.

The Sightseers director has teamed up with writer Amy Jump, who he worked with on Kill List and A Field In England, to bring the dystopian sci-fi novel to the big screen.

The film has been in the works for several years and is being produced by Jeremy Thomas, an old friend of Ballard, the English novelist who died in 2009.

Director Ben, who is shooting the new series of Doctor Who for the BBC, tweeted: “Here we go. Can’t quite believe this is happening.

“Tom Hiddleston! Jeremy Thomas! Script by Amy Jump! JG BALLARD!”

Screen Daily quoted Thor star Tom as saying: “I can’t wait to work with Ben. He is one of the most inspired directors in the UK, and he brings with him impeccable taste, courage, wit and singular brilliance: the perfect combination to realise the ambition of JG Ballard’s unique vision.”

High-Rise, published in 1975, is set in a luxurious block of flats which is designed to cut off its residents from the outside world.

Life in the building descends into chaos, and the residents, isolated from the authorities, end up living at war with one another.

Previous adaptations of Ballard’s work include controversial drama Crash, directed by David Cronenberg, and Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated Empire Of The Sun.
