An exclusive interview with Tom Hiddleston, famous as Loki in the Thor films and now wowing all with his Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse

There is an electric atmosphere in the auditorium of the Donmar Warehouse – more befitting a rock concert than a Shakespearean tragedy – as the audience waits for a preview performance of Coriolanus to begin. Five years since he last appeared on this small stage as a little-known actor, Tom Hiddleston is returning as a bona fide film star.
At 32 Hiddleston has achieved the kind of success that most young actors can only dream of. His performance as Captain Nicholls in Steven Spielberg’s 2011 adaptation of the National Theatre’s War Horse was by far the film’s most memorable. But it is as Loki in Marvel Comics’ blockbusting Thor franchise that Hiddleston has generated an obsessive following.
When he made a surprise appearance in character at the international Comic-Con convention in San Diego last summer, some members of the hysterical 7,000-strong crowd actually knelt in worship. At last count, his Twitter following was approaching a million.

Movie stars Tom Hiddleston and Mark Strong will round out a trio of British villains with Ben Kingsley starring in Jaguar’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial, according to brand VP Jeff Curry.

Jaguar has been running a teaser campaign positioning its new F-Type as a dangerously fast but sexy British bad boy “disrupting” Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the sports car segment.

Jaguar aired its second teaser for the Big Game spot during NFL divisional playoffs telecast on Fox this weekend. Called “The Set-Up,” the 30-second spot showed a well-dressed Mr. Kingsley waiting for the other two to arrive at his lair. Among the bad guys Mr. Kingsley has played are Don Logan in “Sexy Beast” and, most recently, Trevor Slattery/The Mandarin in the “Iron Man” franchise. Mr. Hiddleston will be recognizable to an American audience as Loki from the “Thor” and “Avengers” franchises. Mr. Strong played Lord Blackwood in 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes.” (It seems that all three actors have starred with Robert Downey Jr.)

Looks like Loki has finally emerged from Thor’s shadow. With our female style icon last week being a princess, we decided to cross over to the dark side to find her equally royal male counterpart.
We present to you Tom Hiddleston, the British actor who shot to fame playing Marvel’s Loki, as our Male Style Icon 2013. He’s not only an A-list actor, but a rising style icon who we feel is the very definition of a well dressed modern man. With his pitch-perfect elocution, old-school good looks, a mischievous edge and a sharply-tailored yet youthful fashion philosophy, Tom Hiddleston leads a growing group of English thespians with a thoroughly modern sense of style.

He seems to have terrible luck with rankings, coming in at No 2 on Empire’s The 100 Sexiest Movie Stars List 2013, and just losing out to Dan Stevens for the title of GQ’s Best Dressed Man, but he’s definitely on the top of all our lists. Hiddleston is a quintessentially British gentleman, who looks like he goes to sleep in a three-piece suit, so much so that Esquire used him to illustrate a ‘How to wear Black-tie’ guide. That’s not to say that he can’t pull off casual cool, his personal favourite item from his wardrobe is an Armani leather jacket. We say that any man that can pull off a horned helmet or a studded Versace jacket is an absolute keeper. With an array of hairstyles ranging from short and cropped to long and slicked back like his iconic character, Hiddleston doesn’t shy away from experimentation.

He’s an enourmously vain character and has a prediliction for very glamorous scarves – Tom Hiddleston on Loki

As menstylefashion.com puts it, there’s a playful edge to this look that comes across both in Tom’s body language — the key to all successful styles — and in his choice of accompanying pieces. Whether it’s thick framed sunglasses, a bookish scarf or a cheeky pair of cowboy boots, Tom ensures that a flash of personality keeps the look from becoming intimidating. This is reflected in his more casual wear, which functions as the very definition of ‘smart casual’; those same tailored suit trousers and Oxford shoes paired with a simple T-shirt and leather jacket combo.
He’s currently serving on the London Collections: Men committee of the British Fashion Council because Chair of London Collections Dylan Jones recognised how influential Hiddleston is when it comes to style. Whether he is in medieval kingly garb, a WW1 soldier’s uniform or in a tuxedo on the red carpet, he looks effortlessly well put together. It’s no wonder why he has been named Glamour’s Man of the Year.

There is something about the stage that brings out the best in people. Performers who have achieved global fame on the big screen are humbled before an audience consisting of their old mates. In the climax of this year’s 59th Evening Standard Theatre Awards, Dame Maggie Smith faltered in the spotlight, her eyes glistening with tears, a lump in her throat, as she said that her heart actually ached for the theatre and she wanted more than anything to return to it. ‘But there is no Mrs Lear!’ she cried, as directors and playwrights across the room conferred in a collective aim to find a role for Maggie.

Earlier in the evening, Clarke Peters’ soft and slow rendition of ‘There’s No Business like Show Business’ was spine-tingling. Dame Edna Everage was at the top of her game, sympathising with the Comedy Award winner David Walliams over parents who could not even spell his surname correctly. The host for the evening, Damian Lewis (below), came on stage with a copy of Friday’s Evening Standard and a superbly reworked version of ‘Leaning on a Lamp-post’. He stage-managed the astonishing roll call of talent and national institutions — Boris Johnson, Barbara Windsor, Sir David Attenborough, Helen Mirren, Adrian Lester and Rory Kinnear — with wit and warmth. The lure of theatre never felt stronger.

Do you have any particular method for learning Shakespearean lines?

I’m the man who looks like a lunatic walking around the parks of London talking to himself. I have to be on the move, I can’t learn them sitting at a desk. I march myself around outside, drilling the lines into my brain. There’s no secret: it’s repetition, repetition, repetition, like practising your forehand in tennis.
