The BBC is set to order a second series of John Le Carré’s The Night Manager, after the initial episodes of the broadcaster’s big-budget adaptation garnered huge audiences and rave reviews.

The corporation is understood to be in advanced talks with The Ink Factory, the production company run by two of Le Carré’s sons, for another series based on the characters featured in The Night Manager, marking the first time the author has allowed an adaptation that goes beyond the parameters of his original work.

Le Carré, real name David Cornwell, has written of his delight at the BBC’s £20 million adaptation of his 1993 novel, despite his initial surprise at a decision to change swathes of the book – including the ending, the setting, and the gender of a key character.
The author, who plays a cameo role in the series, wrote: “A lesser being such as myself might reasonably have responded: why not write your own bloody novel? With all those changes, what’s left of mine? And the answer, surprisingly, is: a great deal is left, more than I dared hope.”
The first episode of The Night Manager, which stars Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, was watched by 8.3 million viewers. At more than £3 million an hour, the drama is 50 per cent more expensive than the corporation’s lavish adaptation of War and Peace, and is thought to be the costliest production in its history.

Details of the planned second series are scarce, but sources close to Le Carré said that he had not written a follow-up novel, and it is not known who will pen material for any future episodes. The author’s next published work will be his memoirs, The Pigeon Tunnel, which will be released in September.

Speaking before the release of the first series, Simon Cornwell, the son of the author and executive producer of the programme, said he “would love to do more with the BBC; but I don’t want to tempt fate with telling you what we have in the works”.
Asked at the time whether a second series was possible, he said: “It’s lovely idea but Le Carré has never allowed an adaptation that goes beyond the parameters of the original book. We’re not ruling it out, but we’re not ruling it in.”
